The European Community Organizing Network (ECON) was formed in January, 2008 with the goal of "developing an ongoing network for the promotion, support, and expansion of community organizing in Europe." The original participants came from organizations in Bosnia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden. Interest has developed in recent months in Albania, Austria, and Hungary. ECON developed out of three gatherings of European community organizers at the Le Pont Center in Paris in 2006, 2007, and 2008 sponsored by the German Protestant Church of the Rhineland. In May, 2008 it became a part of the CEE Citizens Network.
ECON holds joint meetings to plan, share, and evaluate community organizing practices. It is developing a website and translations of community organizing materials. It offers international and national trainings, as well as, consulting visits on community organizing. It is also planning site visits and exchanges by community organizers and volunteers. It is governed by national coordinators.
